Stealth Attack

July 5, 2008 / by knotted

I haven't spoken to my mother in a while, for many reasons and all of them my own.
So when my phone rang yesterday at work with an unrecognized number, I didn't even stop to think it would be her.

She was calling, ostensibly, to discuss husband's birthday present and what possibly could be a gift good enough for a man as good as he (my mother, she has a crush on my husband). We agreed on said gift. She made some funnys. She was in good spirits, my mother, which is rare, but when she is in such good spirits, there are few people I find funnier.

Well, she said, at the end. Let's keep open the mother-daughter lines of communication, you and I.

Okay, I said, non-commitally.

Because, you know, I'm pretty terrific! she said, singing.

I didn't stop laughing for 10 minutes and I didn't tell any of my colleagues why. Just a mother-daughter joke on a random Friday afternoon.
